Intro to Electrical

A DIY Workshop for Women

This workshop focuses on electricity in the home: how to maintain your house and how to expand on what you already have. This hands-on workshop has a strong emphasis on safety and will cover:

- Building an understanding of the electricity in your house and how it works
- Adding outlets to an existing “wall”
- Learning the difference between the devices in your home (types of outlets and switching) and how to change them

Each workshop begins with an introduction to hand and power tools, and you'll go home with plenty of resources to help further your electrical understanding! The goal of this workshop is to build a comfort level with the systems in your own home and to help you make informed decisions when talking with a contractor. All skill levels are encouraged.

Class size is limited and preregistration is strongly recommended!

Intro to Power Tools

A DIY Workshop for Women

Have you ever needed a tool and didn't know its correct name, or even if it was the most efficient tool for the job? In this workshop, we'll have a variety of hand and powers tools for you to try out. We'll go over the appropriate ways to safely handle tools and most importantly, you'll have the opportunity to practice your skills with some good, old-fashioned hands-on fun!

Our goal with this workshop if to offer a comfortable and fun space where you can build your confidence in your own personal DIY adventures! You will leave this workshop with a packet of information regarding hand and power tools for your future reference. All skill levels are encouraged. This workshop and for women and teens 13+.

Intro to Plumbing

A DIY Workshop for Women

February 16, 2020

The focus of this workshop is the plumbing in your house. How to maintain your house and how to expand on what you already have. This hands-on workshop has a strong emphasis on safety and will include:

- Building an understanding of how your plumbing system works

- Learning to use techniques such as soldering and Sharkbites to repair your copper pipes

- Understanding the importance of correct ventilation

- Taking apart a toilet tank and different types of faucets to build a better foundation for troubleshooting

 

Each workshop will begin with an introductory course to hand and power tools and you will go home with plenty of resources to help further your plumbing understanding! The goal of this workshop is to build a comfort level with the systems in your own home and to help make informed decisions when talking with a contractor. All skill levels are encouraged!

Intro to HVAC

A DIY Workshop for Women

February 16, 2020

The focus of this workshop is the heating and air conditioning systems in your house. How to maintain your house and how to expand on what you already have. This hands-on workshop has a strong emphasis on safety and will include:

- Building an understanding of how your HVAC system works

- Learning how to correctly maintain your systems for maximum efficiency

- Understanding the difference between the different types of thermostats

- Taking apart an existing system to build a better foundation for troubleshooting

- Tricks on checking your house for air leaks and how to correct this to improve air flow

 

Each workshop will begin with an introductory course to hand and power tools and you will go home with plenty of resources to help further your HVAC understanding! The goal of this workshop is to build a comfort level with the systems in your own home and to help make informed decisions when talking with a contractor. All skill levels are encouraged!

Electrical II: Installing a Ceiling Fan

A DIY Workshop for Women

We will be installing a ceiling fan in the classroom! Come out and learn the different techniques on how to install a ceiling fan in your own home before the summer heat hits. We will also go over different scenarios you may encounter. Please dress accordingly! This workshop expands on our Electrical I workshop.

Building Bird Houses

Did you know that you can control what birds move into your birdhouse by the size of the entry? In this workshop, you will be building your very own birdhouse! Learn about the importance of animal homes and how to correctly size your materials to fit the critter you are aiming to please. You will be using basic hand and power tools to create your projects and learn about the other ways you could use tools in everyday life. This class builds confidence, encourages team-building skills and inspires creativity and fun! All skill levels are welcome. Go home with plenty of resources and a set of plans to build more animal homes in the future!

Building Window Boxes for Herbs

You will be using basic hand and power tools to create your projects and learn about the other ways you could use tools in everyday life. Bug Hotels

Want to encourage pollinators into your yard? Or perhaps just want to provide a safe haven for displaced insects? Let’s create a special space for your garden critters. In this workshop, you will be using available materials to create a fantastic bug hotel for your yard. From butterflies to bees, we will learn how different materials can be used to attract different types of bugs. This educational workshop is filled with hands-on instruction and offers plenty of resources of you to bring home to continue with your bug hospitality! You will be using basic hand and power tools to create your project and learn about the other ways you could use tools in everyday life. All skill levels are welcome.

Intro to Carpentry

A DIY Workshop for Women

The focus of this workshop is carpentry. How to maintain your house and how to expand on what you already have. This hands-on workshop has a strong emphasis on safety and will include:

- Building an understanding of how your house is built and why

- Constructing a mini-wall, from learning to frame the studs to applying the drywall

- Patching holes, large and small

- In-depth tool exploration, from hand tools to power tools

- Understanding and trying different hardware, from different screw types to various kinds of anchors

 

Each workshop will begin with an introductory course to hand and power tools and you will go home with plenty of resources to help further your carpentry understanding! The goal of this workshop is to build a comfort level with the systems in your own home and to help make informed decisions when talking with a contractor. All skill levels are encouraged!
